Neuromuscular therapy (NMT) is a form of soft tissue manual therapy. It is distinguished from other types of massage in that a quasi-static pressure is applied to the skin with the aim of stimulating specific areas of skeletal muscle.

Often these areas of muscle are myofascial trigger points. NMT is a comprehensive program of soft tissue manipulation techniques that balance the central nervous system (brain, spinal column and nerves) with the structure and form of the musculoskeletal system.

NMT is based on neurological laws that explain how the central nervous system maintains homoeostatic balance. During the last several decades, neuromuscular therapy (NMT) has emerged as a significant methodology for assessing, treating and preventing soft tissue injuries and chronic pain.

NMT, a series of manual treatment protocols based on the practitioner’s skill, anatomy knowledge and precise palpatory application, has found its home, not only in the treatment rooms of massage therapy, but also in occupational and physical therapy, nursing, Naturopathic, chiropractic, osteopathic and physical medicine clinics worldwide, as well as in many forward-looking Primary Care practices.

Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT)

icon Benefits

  • Helps restore homeostasis between the nervous and muscloskeletal systems.
  • Enhances the function of joints and muscles, the biomechanics of the body.
  • Speeds healing by facilitating the release of the body’s own pain killers, endorphins.
  • Approaches healing from a holistic perspective creating long-term results.
  • Deactivates myofascial trigger points.
  • Relax and normalise tense fibrotic muscular tissue.
  • Enhance lymphatic and general circulation.

One of the premises governing NMT is that the procedures utilised should stimulate the body to heal on its own. Once this healing has begun, NMT can be used to stimulate soft-tissue repair in specific areas, while simultaneously addressing some of the perpetuating factors causing the patient’s pain. In this manner, a whole body approach to healing is achieved.
